You Don't Need to be Fluent: Prioritizing the Right Words to Build Bridges

As a language teacher, it’s odd to say and rarer to hear: but you don’t need to be fluent. You do need to know enough to connect with other humans in a language that helps them feel seen, valued, and heard.

This keynote is full of jokes and stories about the shaky middle ground between fluency and ignorance, highlighting why we’re better together.

Key takeaways:

  • Why tone, context, and intent are at the heart of good communication.

  • The 3 most important words anyone can learn (in any language).

  • It’s not just the verb conjugations: uncovering the hidden layers of language and pop culture to help outsiders feel like insiders.

Harnessing the Power of Words through Neurolinguistics

Neurolinguistics is a science that straddles neuroscience and linguistics, and studies the power of our language in our brains.

In this keynote, we’ll review which words and phrases help us band together and which can lead us to stray apart. We review the parts of speech and play a game to see how changing only the subject can soften or harden a sentence, along with other interactive audience games.

Key Takeaways:

  • The specific words we use come loaded with context, nuance, implicit, and explicit meanings.

  • Different languages and cultures with distinct values utilize and value specific words and phrases.

  • Want to change your perspective? Update how you think and speak about a concept.

Designing and Improving a Learning Management System

Learning Management Systems are all the rage, for good reason - finally, something to collect all the training material in one place, with pretty reports and trackability. It all sounds good… but who actually puts it together?

Every system is only as good as the strategy behind it, and this keynote delivers crucial tips and significant milestones from someone who’s been - and seen it all.

Key Takeaways:

  • Technology is only part of the solution: people and process are the two missing parts.

  • Having a core team to maintain and improve the system at dedicated points will help spread the workload.

  • How to create buy-in from everyone at the company: from the receptionist to the C-Suite.
